A selection of work across categories, showing how consumer understanding, category context and strategic thinking can help solve different kinds of brand and business challenges.
Selected work reflects experience across roles and organisations, and is indicative of the nature of work undertaken.
DEFINING A BRAND ACROSS CATEGORY BOUNDARIES
The Situation: A new business offering was emerging at the intersection of real estate and hospitality. While it had the potential to scale independently, it lacked a clear definition – neither fully a product nor a service – making it difficult to position and communicate.
The Approach: The work focused on understanding how consumers and stakeholders perceived the value across both categories. Exploration revealed that while real estate delivered ownership and permanence, hospitality brought experience and flexibility – both of which needed to coexist within the offering.
This led to defining a brand proposition that brought together tangible and experiential value, creating a clearer and more cohesive narrative for the business.
The Outcome: A distinct positioning that helped shape a new category expression, making the offering easier to understand and engage with for both home owners and land owners and also catch the attention of travellers. The brand was able to move forward with greater clarity across communication and business direction.
This work highlighted the importance of defining a clear proposition when operating across category boundaries and set definitions.

BUILDING RELEVANCE IN A LOW TRUST, BELIEF DRIVEN CATEGORY
The Situation: An organic packaged food brand operating across staples such as pulses, oils, spices etc was struggling to build relevance among urban consumers. Where there was interest in better quality foods, organic was seen as expensive, difficult to trust and lacking clear benefits.
For most consumers, the question remained – if current consumption wasn’t causing a problem, why switch?
The Approach: The work focused on understanding consumer behaviour, beliefs and purchase drivers within the category. Consumer research revealed a key tension – while organic was associated with purity, its benefits were unclear. Was it preventive or did it offer something more immediate and tangible?
This led to defining a clear role for the brand by sharpening what purity meant, grounding it in visible and experiential cues such as taste, smell, visual codes of quality while simplifying the way organic was explained to consumers.
The Outcome: A strong, more accessible and relatable positioning that made the offering easier to understand and evaluate. The brand was able to communicate more clearly bridging the gap between belief and benefit and making the shift to organic feel more relevant and justifiable.
This work highlighted the role of belief systems in shaping consumption and the importance of translating abstract benefits into tangible experiences – balancing a rational as well as an emotional payoff.

SOLVING A CATEGORY TRADE OFF THROUGH PRODUCT INNOVATION
The Situation: In the laundry category, consumers often had to choose between deep cleaning and long lasting fragrance. While liquid detergents delivered on fabric care, fragrance was typically achieved through a separate conditioner – adding cost and complexity to the routine.
The Approach: The work focused on understanding how consumers navigated this trade off within everyday laundry habits. Consumer research highlighted a clear tension – the desire for both care and freshness, without the need for multiple products or added effort.
This led to identifying an opportunity to simplify the routine by combining both benefits into a single solution, making it easier for the consumers to achieve complete fabric care in one wash and with one product itself.
The Outcome: A new product was developed that brought together detergent and conditioner benefits into one offering – simplifying the laundry process while delivering on both performance and experience.
This strengthened the brand’s relevance by removing a key barrier and making the decision easier for consumers.

REFRAMING A BRAND WITHIN A CULTURALLY ROOTED MARKET
The Situation: A personal care brand, from once of the FMCG giants, rooted in Ayurveda was present in a market with strong local traditions and deeply embedded cultural practices. Despite it’s heritage, the brand struggled to establish relevance within a context that already had it’s own understanding of natural remedies and wellness.
The Approach: The work focused on understanding how wellness and personal care were perceived within the local cultural context. Consumer exploration revealed that while practices differed, the underlying belief systems were closely aligned – particularly around the idea of “balance” as a way of life – which also resonated with the founding principles of Ayurveda – to have a “balance”.
This led to reframing the brand not as an external system but as one that reflected a familiar and meaningful philosophy within the local context.
The Outcome: A clearer brand positioning that translated the essence of Ayurveda into a culturally resonant narrative. This helped the brand feel more familiar and relevant, strengthening it’s role within everyday personal care routines.
This work highlighted the importance of cultural understanding and reframing to fit within existing behaviour thus, shaping the brand strategy across international markets.

REFRAMING A PRODUCT WITHIN AN EVOLVING HAIR CARE ROUTINE
The Situation: A hair oil brand was struggling to stay relevant with younger consumers. While oiling remained essential for nourishment, changing lifestyles brought new concerns around dryness, frizz & manageability. Lighter oils delivered on sensorial experience but were often perceived as lacking in nourishment.
The Approach: The work focused on understanding how the role of hair oil was evolving with everyday routines. Consumer research revealed a clear tension – the need for nourishment without compromising on how hair looked and felt through the day.
This led to building a solution around ingredients that signalled both nourishment and lightness while addressing newer concerns around dryness, frizz and manageability.
The Outcome: A new product was developed that stayed true to the brand’s core of being a light hair oil, while addressing evolving consumer expectations around nourishment and manageability.
This work highlighted how shifts in consumer behaviour can redefine the role a product plays within a category.

ENTERING A MARKET WITH STRONG EXISTING PREFERENCES
The Situation: A global food brand was looking to establish itself in a market with deeply entrenched local tastes and strong category loyalty. The challenge was not just awareness but acceptance. Consumer behaviour was shaped by a clear preference for familiar, bold flavours, leaving little room for alternatives.
The Approach: The work began with understanding the consumer beyond stated preferences — exploring habits, motivations and openness to change within the cultural context. Market research and category analysis were used to identify where rigidity existed and where there was curiosity.
This led to reframing the role of the brand. Instead of competing directly with established choices, it was positioned as a way to introduce variety and exploration within everyday consumption.
The Outcome: A clearer brand positioning that worked with existing behaviour rather than against it. The strategy created relevance without forcing change, allowing the brand to find a natural place within the category and encouraging trial among new users.
This work highlighted the importance of understanding consumer behaviour and cultural context before defining brand strategy.
